Bookworm Give-Away

Have I mentioned that I'm a book geek?  I love reading. Fiction, non fiction, science fiction, fantasy, biography, humor, diet books, thrillers, and most anything except romance & mystery.

I have been really lucky to have participated and WON some great give-aways lately on other blogs.  Now it's time to pay it forward to some of you!

There will be three winners! Here's what you could win:

An Autographed copy of Half Assed by Jenette Fulda aka Pasta Queen

A copy of on of the books that changed my life, Women Food and God by Geneen Roth

Such a Pretty Face, a work of fiction by Cathy Lamb

How to participate:

Leave a comment here listing 3 books that could change our lives  for the better.

1 Must be fiction
1 Must be diet/fitness related
1 of your choice of genres

Preferrably books I haven't read would be great, so try to be original and don't use something that's already been posted. You may enter more than 3 if you have at least one fiction and one fitness related book.

All submissions should be in by 11:59 p.m. Ohio time on Sunday Sept 19. Please leave me an email or link to your blog so that I may easily notify you if you win.  Good luck!

  1. I love this idea!! We will each receive so many new idaes for books to read. Here are my three picks:
1.Fiction: She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb: one of my favorites. Story is a complicated one of a young girl who is raped and consequently becomes obese (up to 263 pounds). It is a human drama story including mental health and coming of age.

2.Non-fiction: What to Eat by Marion Nestle: If you read my blog, you know this is a book I talk about over and over. Dr. Nestle is the Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health (the department she chaired from 1988-2003) and Professor of Sociology at New York University. Her degrees include a Ph.D. in molecular biology and an M.P.H. in public health nutrition, both from the University of California, Berkeley. She is straight talking and humorous.

3.Omnivores Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan: What should we have for dinner? The question has confronted us since man discovered fire, but according to Michael Pollan, how we answer it today, at the dawn of the twenty-first century, may well determine our very survival as a species. Should we eat a fast-food hamburger? Something organic? Or perhaps something we hunt, gather, or grow ourselves?

  2. Thanks Michele! I've read your first one. That was a hard read! Most of Wally Lamb's books are that way though. So emotional! I've never heard of the 2nd one, but I have taken eating advice from Nestle before! :D

I'll put those two on my list of reads for sure!

  3. Thanks for the giveaway! Hoping to win Geneen Roth's book.

Fiction: I don't know if it'll change your life, but it's certainly a favorite: Pride & Prejudice, and if that's not unique enough, I recently enjoyed immensely Darcy's Voyage, a retelling of P&P.

Diet/Fitness: Fat Land by Greg Critser. Very interesting, easy to read and eye-opening. America didn't become overweight by accident!

Other Genre: Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller. AMAZING book. I wanted to go out, buy a case and hand out copies to people. Incredible.

    Thanks!

  6. Hey there! I LOVE to read...so I'm going to keep checking back to these suggestions.

So, my fiction book would be: The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I just got done reading this, so it's probably the first one I thought of. I liked it. I also love Jodi Piccoult books like "My Sister's Keeper." They really get me thinking about things from all different perspectives.

Health book: "Breaking Free of Compulsive Eating" by Geneen Roth. I HEART this book...it was the first that I read and it helped me feel not so alone in my struggles. I feel like she climbed inside my head and wrote MY story. I'm currently reading "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan - if you haven't read it, I'll let you know how I like it.

My own genre: "Dress Your Family in Courderoy & Denim" by David Sedaris. OMG. So funny. These are short stories about his life - so not fictional. I laugh at "Six to Eight Black Men" every time. But now that I'm writing about this, I'm thinking about the terminology of "opening a jar of pickles" that I wrote about on my blog...and I remember someone saying that they had read that book too. If it was you, sorry. :( Have you read any of Mary Roach? She has a book called "Stiff" and one called "Boink" where she writes humorously about her research on dead people and sex respectively. It's off the wall, also not fictional, but good.

Nonfiction Diet: Mario Lopez's Knockout Fitness. He is hot and shows you how to be too. lol

Other: Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. This man saved my marriage and my back account. It really will change your life.

  8. 1. Fiction: Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man by Fannie Flagg
    2. Non-Fiction: The Glass Castle by Jeanette Wells. I feel like I'm not so bad of a mother, and that I could still be better.
    3. My genre: Anne of Green Gables Series! LOVE THEM!

  9. I haven't forgotten, but I don't think I'm going to make it until midnight tonight. 2 more hours for people to enter so I will check in the morning.

You can always add to your suggestions - no rule about having more than 3. Most of you did a great job actually following the rules. My BFF is the greatest, but not so hot with reading directions and talking on the phone at the same time :P
