Board board board board board!

I was reading about self-soothing techniques yesterday  (see Shelfari on sidebar) and learned that many people say they eat out of boredom. I couldn't help but roll my eyes. One of my many intolerances is for people who are or become "bored."  I'd like to take a Cricket board to them much like Vyvyan does in the above clip. Bored is not an emotion, it is a state of mind. Look around us, how could anybody be bored, ever? People, be honest with yourself and figure out what you're really feeling! Bored is usually any easy word - an excuse even - masking other feelings.

Most people when they say they are "bored" really mean that they are experiencing some type of unbearable disatisfaction. Usually, there is something they'd rather do but they feel limited by some circumstance and therefore unable to do what they want. That involves some sadness, some frustration, and maybe some anger. Once you recognize the details of what you are feeling, you can deal with them, instead of just whining around that you're "bored" or stuffing your face for entertainment purposes.

Is this post boring? Really? Are you bored? Are you disappointed that I'm taking your word "bored" away from you? That's a bad word in our house. Find a better word. It's like saying somebody is "nice" when you mean they are friendly and welcoming, warm or funny. Be more specific! Ugh. Hand me that cricket bat, Vyv. Stop making excuses. Think about why you're letting yourself get frustrated and solve the problem. There is no "bored." There is only "not trying hard enough".

  1. Now I'm getting bored...having difficulty posting this message. Lanie, I consider myself to be bored when my thoughts are drifting to food and I'm not even hungry...like at work when we're not that busy. But, "limited by their circumstances,"is a much better way to put it.

Thanks for sticking up for me. I wanted to e-mail you, but couldn't find an address. You understood.

  2. I never understood the "bored" thing either, Lanie. It blows me away when someone says they are bored. Maybe my life is more hectic than most, though I doubt that, but there isn't enough time in the day to get everything done, much less time to be bored. Actually, what I wouldn't GIVE for a day of boredome! I'd take a nap, read a book, watch some HGTV, catch up on blogs.... I can see getting bored *with* something, like a diet, a husband... haha... but then you just gotta shake it up a bit and make it UNboring. It's all about choices. CathyB

  3. Showing a little of your ranting side, are you???
What gets me is when kids say they are bored. My heart seriously weeps. How can a kid be bored with the entire natural world at their disposal?
No, not a boring post at all.

  4. Oh you would so not agree with some of the stuff I have blogged about me eating out of boredom! I am still working through it all to understand it for myself.
